Inciting Violence for One's Political/Religious Views: A Plainfield Case

In this day and age, to even suggest that those who don't agree with a political view should be beheaded is crossing the line--it is INCITING VIOLENCE--it is threatening, irresponsible, and dangerous.

The reason I say "dangerous" is that at one point in a long and rambling post on Facebook that came up on my newsfeed Sunday night, Alex Toliver seems to be suggesting that "beheading" is what I deserve--if one can discern the meaning through all the grammatical errors: "THE WORSE RERSON[S] IS A [HYPERERCRITICAL LIAR THAT CANT DE TRUSTED IN THE MID EAST THEY DO BEHEAD THEM DONT THEY!?"

Disagreeing with an individual's political stance is one thing. I disagree with the undemocratic bullying tactics of Jerry Green, who disenfranchised the duly-elected local Democratic party and chose Diane Toliver, Gloria Taylor, and Charles Eke to run for local office--a slap in the face to local party members. In this day and age, to even suggest that those who don't agree with a political view should be beheaded is crossing the line--it is INCITING VIOLENCE--it is threatening, irresponsible, and dangerous. He is fueling animosity that I take as a threat.

"you looked GREAT last nite i loved your hair"
"some that u know don't know where their REAL help come from"
Backstory: Sunday evening, as I was multitasking on my computer (chatting on Facebook while working on some research projects), a strange post came up on my Facebook newsfeed. I realized that it was from Alex Toliver, whose scurrilous (and possibly dangerous) ravings about me were apparently what was occupying his mind on a Sunday night. This is a different "Alex" from the past--in the past, he would send me decidedly "private" FB messages of a different and personal type--you be the judge of what these messages suggest (see at right).

So, out of curiosity, I went to his Facebook page (he was a FB "friend") and read the entire barely literate rant--it is posted in its entirety at the bottom of this blog post, along with the screen shots. What I saw was alarming.

Among other lies, he accuses me of being a member of a "cult." In his sadly befuddled mind, my "crimes" include not pledging the flag, which he fully knows I do not do for religious reasons. Toliver, along with the former
"u are a special person" "great picture of you and mr mapp but I like yours alone"

mayor, tried to question my patriotism 2 years ago, but when I called him out about it, he at least had the decency to admit that he was wrong. I was the one who wrote and introduced a resolution thanking him for his assistance in organizing the veterans portion of the Independence Day events in 2012, when he complained to me (at the event) that the former mayor hadn't even mentioned his name at the concert (which was true--it was the talk of the tent we were under)--he was invisible to her. I felt that he should have been congratulated, so I did the resolution. No good deed goes unpunished, I guess.

He also takes me to task for not supporting his mentor, the so-called leader "Jerry Green," whose slanderous lies about me backfired against him and made statewide news. Alex, his wife, their running mates, and Jerry Green tried to assassinate my character during the recent primary--it didn't work. The PEOPLE elected me to office as a grassroots Democrat who always puts them first. All Alex Toliver will be remembered for is giving away $1.2 million in taxpayer dollars to further enrich his PMUA cronies at the expense of the hardworking people of Plainfield. Shameful. He is morally befouled.

Below is his harassing rant in its entirety:

Congratulations, Woodland Elementary School Graduates!

On Friday, June 20, I was honored to be the Keynote Speaker at the Woodland Elementary School 2014 Graduation. It was a wonderful event, and the earnest and happy faces of the children showed their anticipation of moving forward. After my talk, I was able to shake the hands and chat with each and every young graduate--some told me that they wanted to be doctors, engineers, and most said they would be doing their share of summer reading!--always a PLUS!

Woodland Elementary School is blessed to have a strong PTO, a strong leader in Principal Shirley Johnson-Tucker, a great staff and faculty, and students who live up to high academic standards. They will now be moving on to the challenge, the excitement, and the hope of middle school in September! What a wonderful group! Congratulations to them all, and to the parents, teachers, principal, and staff!

UPDATE: Recreation Facilities and Liquor Licenses

Recreation Facilities
Last night, we heard once again the continued lament about Milt Campbell Field. Although the neglect has gone on for years, it is only recently (the past couple of months) that certain political individuals (in this case, the "Tolivers") have come to the city council to complain about it. I have been on the council for 3+ years, but this has only recently become an issue, apparently. The extremely poor council representation of the First Ward speaks for itself--as well as the general neglect of our parks and recreational facilities by the previous administration. Just by looking at the photos, one can see that the failure of the past administration to properly maintain our city's parks (Milt Campbell Field, especially) has had a long history--years of neglect--the overgrown brush, the rust and broken benches, etc. In addition, the city's pools were neglected to the point that some need new liners and other kinds of maintenance. Luckily, the new Recreation Superintendent (Veronica Taylor) has brought competence, efficiency, and a superior work ethic to the division. Although she has only been at the helm for a couple of months, she has a firm grasp on what needs to be done to counteract the waste and incompetence of the past 8+ years, which resulted in a lack of maintenance of and attention to our recreational facilities.

Liquor Licenses
Thankfully, the city council unanimously voted once again for NON-RENEWAL of the license for Clinton Deli and Liquors--clearly, the continuing poor record of this establishment made anything but another vote of non-renewal hard for even a sympathetic councilperson to seriously consider. We are STILL waiting on the state to render a decision from last year, when we voted not to renew the license. The wheels of justice turn slowly, but I am hopeful that very strong case we made will prevail. Also, the council voted to table the discussion of several other establishments, which also had scores of violations. As Councilor Storch pointed out, we need to impose conditions on these establishments--one had 148 police calls, and another had 119. The amount of taxpayer money used for public safety at these places is a serious concern. One condition to consider would be to have the establishments hire their own security in the form of off-duty police--that way, the city will not have to bear the cost of police resources.

SPEAK OUT ON COMMUNITY SAFETY: LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!

The city council will be granting renewals/non-renewals of liquor licenses  at this evening's council meeting at the Municipal Courthouse at 8:00 PM. The community needs to come out to voice any concerns it may have.

This year, the police have once again urged non-renewal of the menace's (Clinton Avenue Liquors) liquor license. The council should unanimously support the police position. Any councilor who thinks that the desires of the owners who continue to break the law and allow criminality in their store should outweigh Plainfield's public safety needs to consider his or her duty to the residents of this city.

Last year, not only did the owners allow drugs to be sold and criminality to continue at their store, but they (Naicken and his daughter) were ARRESTED for selling alcohol to a minor and drugs from behind the counter. In our council packets were all the documents--including their MUG SHOTS from the arrests--which I made sure everyone took a second look at.

Unbelievably, several councilors (Reid, Rivers, and Greaves) defended Naicken, saying that he deserved "another chance" and that he was a tax payer in the city. A quick look at the tax records will show that some of those properties were in arrears to the tune of thousands of dollars--but some councilors don't care about whether business owners pay their taxes--many don't care to pay their own taxes in a timely fashion or at all--hypocrisy reigns. It was only because of public pressure that those councilors backed down from the indefensible position they originally took (much like the pressure brought to bear upon them to change their stance regarding the Liberty Village PILOT). Because I made sure that Liberty Village residents came to the city council meeting by distributing a flier, they vilified me--I guess it's okay for them to leaflet the community about their meetings, but not okay for me to leaflet about the council meetings--again, hypocrisy rules.

This is your city--show up to let the council know that you do not want criminality to continue.

MENACE TO SOCIETY...AGAIN

SCENE OF THE CRIMES
The city council will be granting renewals/non-renewals of liquor licenses  at the Monday, June 16 council meeting at the Municipal Courthouse at 8:00 PM. The community needs to come out to voice any concerns it may have.

In August of 2013, I wrote a blog post on what I viewed as the "menace to society" created by the crime-ridden Clinton Deli & Liquors, located on West Front Street in the Fourth Ward. Not only did the owners allow drugs to be sold and criminality to continue at their store, but they (Naicken and his daughter) were ARRESTED for selling alcohol to a minor and drugs from behind the counter. In our council packets were all the documents--including their MUG SHOTS from the arrests--which I made sure everyone took a second look at.  See my post here.

Unbelievably, several councilors (Reid, Rivers, and Greaves) defended Naicken, saying that he deserved "another chance" and that he was a tax payer in the city. A quick look at the tax records will show that some were in arrears to the tune of thousands of dollars--but some councilors don't care about whether business owners pay their taxes--many don't care to pay their own taxes in a timely fashion or at all--hypocrisy reigns. This year, the police have once again urged non-renewal of the menace's liquor license. The council should unanimously support the police position. Any councilor who thinks that the desires of the owners who continue to break the law and allow criminality in their store should outweigh Plainfield's public safety needs to consider his or her duty to the residents of this city. I will repeat some of what I said last year:

From August 15, 2013: "The owner has shown contempt and disregard for the law here in Plainfield, and the fact that BOTH THE OWNER AND HIS DAUGHTER WERE RECENTLY ARRESTED AT THE STORE FOR SELLING ALCOHOL TO A MINOR AND DRUGS (!!!), respectively, shows that they feel they can do whatever they want.It is OUTRAGEOUS to even consider allowing these individuals to continue to endanger our kids and our community!

A liquor license is a privilege, not a right. [Naicken] has abused that privilege--being part and parcel of the criminality that he allows to occur in his store. Since the Monday council meeting, I have heard from 4th Ward residents [and many others since] who expressed that they will be happy if the council denies the menace a liquor license."

NEW Leadership - The Next Generation of Women Leaders!

On Monday, June 9, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking to the current class of young women in the NEW (National Education for Women's) Leadership Program, sponsored by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University's Eagleton Institute of Politics. The event was held at Thomas Edison State College in Trenton, as part of the six-day residential program to educate college women about the political process and to promote civic engagement as these young women take on leadership roles in their own communities.

The panel I was on was "The Difference Women Public Leaders Make," moderated by Serena DiMaso, Deputy Director of the Monmouth Board of Freeholders. Also on the panel were Azra Baig, who has made history as the first South Asian woman and the first Muslim to serve on the South Brunswick School Board; Melissa Orsen, Deputy Commissioner from the NJ Department of Community Affairs; and Councilwoman Toni Angelini of Matawan.

We were asked several questions, such as "What is the single most important piece of advice you would give college women in getting involved in public life?" Other questions focused on keeping balance in one's life as an officeholder, the importance of women being involved in public service, and what inspired us to run for office.

Having just come off a successful re-election run, my answer to the first question was, pretty much, "Have a strong stomach, know who you are, do not be swayed by the attempts to smear your character." I elaborated by doing a show-and-tell of the  ridiculous cease-and-desist letter and the lie-filled campaign literature produced by Jerry Green and his buddy, Sen. President Steve Sweeney, and Toliver, Eke, and Taylor, that was used to try to destroy my political career as well as the reputations of my running mates and the mayor. I also referenced the homophobic mailer Green sent out during my first run for office in 2010. The bullying and intimidation tactics used against me resonated with the women.

"He must've really wanted to get rid of you!" one of them said as the material was passed around. I concurred, even as I said that I was presenting myself as a success story. I won. In Column E. In spite of the lies, the smears, and the loathsome tactics used by Jerry Green which, as I told these women, made statewide news, he was exposed as a state-level embarrassment with possibly additional ethical/legal issues in his future.

It was important for me to ensure that these young women understood that they could be successful in standing up to bullying and intimidation, that they could win even if placed in a nearly-impossible ballot position, and that they could maintain their principles and values in a hostile environment by leaders who want nothing more than power and control.

We also discussed the positive aspects of public service, such as getting citizens involved in serving on boards and commissions, passing legislation (such as municipal pay-to-play reform, competitive bidding), getting streets paved, resolving constituent concerns, and passing the annual budget to provide resources to the administration.

After the panel was over, I exchanged cards with several of the young women to follow up on some of the nuts-and-bolts aspects of running for office. Some were interested in running for district committee seats in their home counties, and running for other elective offices, while others were more interested in working on public policy issues, especially in terms of representing issues of prime importance to women specifically (reproductive rights), and current issues of immigration reform, student loan servicing, and voting rights.

I was honored to be a part of this panel, and to meet our next generation of leaders!

Best,

Rebecca

The People Have Spoken--Thanks for Your Support

I want to thank those Plainfield voters who supported progress in Plainfield by voting for me, along with my running mates, Charles McRae and Emmett Swan, two outstanding men, whose courage and strength were awesome to behold as they entered the public arena for the first time. Charles needed only 28 of the votes that went to his opponent to win his race. That's how close elections can be in Plainfield. My team withstood the negative, gutter politics of Jerry Green and his people with grace. We ran a good race, talked to the voters about the issues facing Plainfield, and the voters returned me to office. For that, I thank you all.

It is clear that ballot placement is important, as well as having politicians such as Cory Booker and Bonnie Watson-Coleman at the top of the ticket. However, enough people voted against the lies Jerry Green and his candidates wrote about me so that I could emerge as the winner in the wards I represent.

In the process of running this election, we attracted statewide notice--pulling back the curtain on Jerry Green's manipulation of his council majority--as other bloggers have noted, there might be big trouble waiting in the wings for him after an investigation.

The opponents and their boss, Jerry Green, focused on my perceived shortcomings and attacked me and the mayor, as well as other individuals with campaign material so vile (produced by Jerry Green but approved by Diane Toliver and Gloria Taylor and Charles Eke) that it makes a mockery of their entire campaign. When I wrote about the "Green Stain" the other day, it was in response to this vile material that they carefully circulated.

I will continue to vote ethically and conscientiously and in the best interests of the residents. The people spoke--they will get what they voted for. From all of us.

Best,

Rebecca

Let's End Pollution in Plainfield!

Let's end pollution in Plainfield! Diane Toliver is having her campaign workers stick absolutely VILE campaign literature (paid for by her campaign and her mentor, Jerry Green) into the doors of 1st Ward residents. We have been receiving phone calls and texts about her filth.

She and her cronies Eke and Taylor--unqualified, unethical, reckless, and ill-informed--have shown their true colors--negative, nasty, destructive, and doing the bidding of Jerry Green. Show them that you know better--REJECT their filth. On Tuesday, June 3rd, remove the "GREEN STAIN" from Plainfield.

Just Say "NO!" to Bully Jerry Green and His PMUA Candidates and Cronies

JUST SAY "NO!" to Jerry Green and his hand-picked PMUA candidates and friends. Their lies and recklessness have demonstrated that they have no constructive proposals of their won. For the last 20 years, Jerry Green's "leadership" has made him a state-wide embarrassment. Now he wants to bring unqualified, know-nothing cronies to the council table.

Do you really want Jerry Green to control your Plainfield city council?

On Tuesday, June 3rd, just say "NO!"
